A revolutionary program in California has matched teenage tutors with adults to help the adults get their high-school diploma. A report in the Los Angeles Times explains how both tutors and students have benefitted from the scheme, and both have learnt something.
The teenagers, from Palos Verdes High School, have been getting up at 7am on their weekends, and going to Compton to help adults who didn’t receive their diploma first time round. The adults are committed to achieving the qualification that they missed out on to try and improve their life now. However, the tutors have also had life-changing experiences after meeting their students, and understanding the difficulties in their lives, and the dedication and hard work needed to overcome them.
The tutors are high academic achievers, and are destined for further education, and it’s hoped that the valuable lessons learnt from their aspiring students will encourage even greater commitment to the tutors’ future studies.
