Ethical Tutoring

Today I have been advising a tutor who has a problem student. Although this issue doesn’t come up often, it is frequent enough to merit an article. This student wishes her tutor to do all her reading for a particular subject and provide typed up notes with salient points, counter arguments etc - basically she wishes the tutor to do all her work for her.

Being ethical, this tutor has tried to establish a different way of working with the student, explaining that it is not her job to provide notes for the student to learn, that the student must go through the process of learning herself in order to obtain her degree. The student isn’t happy however, and unfortunately this tutor has felt it necessary to terminate the agreement.

In this situation it is absolutely a priority to report requests like this to us. In this way, should we receive a complaint from the student we have a ‘heads up’ as to the situation. It also allows us to make a decision as to whether we send any further tutors to a particular student.

It is important to Blue Tutors that our tutors trust us to help them through difficult situations like this. Both pete and I have been tutoring a long time and have a lot of experience with which to advise you. If in doubt, ring or email and we will endeavour to get back to you asap to help you out.
