Reading Lists for Summer
While you might not want to overload your student for the summer break, it is good to send them off with the idea that a small amount of something will be beneficial to them.
In the Science subjects it might not be so easy - perhaps there are some programmes online that they could watch and have a think about, if there’s no reading material you think will be engaging enough.
In the Humanities it tends to be easier to set a reading list. How to gauge the contents of this and how many books to include is a different story, however. Obviously it’s a great idea to visit the websites of the most popular exam boards but sometimes including more of a recent bestseller is a good idea.
On a recently composed list, I have mixed up the AQA English GCSE books with a couple of popular best sellers. This way the student doesn’t feel so much like it’s homework and might come to enjoy reading more, which is of course one of my ultimate aims.
Also, it’s a good idea to tailor your reading list. Less demanding for those who are struggling, so that they continue - more demanding for those who are pushing the top grade barriers. There are certainly several books not meant for children around in the bestseller lists which are perfectly suitable for kids.
Treat them is what I’m trying to say - don’t make it all work work!
