The number of students applying to study medicine at university is at an all time high. Reported on the BBC, 23,710 applications were received by the 15th October deadline which represents a 6% increase on last year’s figure. This is the deadline for all medicine, veterinary, dentistry and Oxbridge applications.
Of the total number of applicants, 18.500 are from the UK, 1,680 are from EU countries and 3,530 from outside of the EU. Each of these figures show an increase too, up 5%, 1% and 10% respectively. This follows UK universities expanding the number of medicine places available for the third year in a row.
The chief executive of UCAS, Clare Marchant, said it was encouraging to see so many aspiring young students. She added “I'm inspired by the record number of students who are ready to take on the challenge of demonstrating they have the knowledge, skills, and potential to succeed on these ever-competitive courses.”
