The trend for him schooling in the UK seems to be growing year upon year, and as a result there is an increased demand for tutors to help home schooled pupils, particularly at GCSE and A Level as parents are less confident to teach their children themselves at those levels.
There are many reasons parents choose to home school their children, many are disillusioned with our education system either because of the teaching or for pastoral reasons. Obviously the prevalence of tutoring has made him schooling more of a viable option for families, but there is a lot more to consider than simply a student’s academic performance up to the age of 18.
One of the most important reasons for going to school is social interaction, especially at primary school. From a young age we learn by playing and our peers are a big part of this. Even as we get older the exchange of ideas or just plain arguing with each other develops a deeper understanding of a topic. In fact, the pedagogical process we ask from our tutors requires students to be challenged and to discuss alternative points of view.
We are always happy to find tutors for home schooled students, and it can be really positive when the tutor is a recent graduate because that’s more time the student spends with someone closer to their age. However, we also always advise parents to maintain an active social life for their children to encourage creativity and the things that can be overlooked when someone isn’t at school.
